Chicken Noodle Soup is Missional
Thursday, November 12, 2009
As I lead a City Group, I am constantly looking for ways to be missional in our neighborhood. Too often I am drawn to elaborate plans that will draw tons of people and be seen in the eyes of others as “successful.” Being missional doesn’t need to be elaborate or even hard. Here is a short story to prove it!
One family, who host a City Group at Austin City Life, is missional through chicken noodle soup. Yes, chicken noodle soup! It was simple, but impacting. All the family did was cook a huge vat of soup and opened their home. The day of, they advertised on facebook, twitter, and through their yahoo group, simply asking neighbors, friends, and family to come eat. Tons of people came to join the festivities! It was an amazing opportunity to build relationships within the neighborhood and to connect people to our City Group. And to add to it, God gave us perfect soup weather!
I think we complicate being missional. We view it as another task to add to a long list of other priorities. Being missional isn’t a task, it is a lifestyle. And being a lifestyle, shouldn’t it fit in with everyday life? It should, and it does! Being missional is simple...it is simple as chicken noodle soup!
